Joseph married Elizabeth Abbiss, daughter of James Abbiss and Hannah, on 10 Apr 1845 in St.Thomas's, Dudley. (Elizabeth Abbiss was born in 1825 in Gornall, Sedgley, christened on 5 Feb 1826 in Sedgley and died in 1889 in Sheffield, Yorks.)

Some members of Ancestry have Elizabeth Heathcock as Joseph's wife. However, this person was born in Old Swinford, Worcs - not Staffordshire (Sedgley/Gornal) as is recorded in the censuses. The registers of St.Thomas's, Dudley show Joseph married Elizabeth Abbiss. It would also seem that Elizabeth Abbiss had a brother Reuben after whom she named her youngest son.

Latest (15 May 2013): Kaye Goodwin (descendant of this couple) has purchased the marriage certificate and conforms that Joseph's bride was indeed Elizabeth Abbiss.
