No census records yet found for a Letitia McDougal, so named, but this could be her:

1841: Hanley St, Birmingham. William Holmes 35 Japanner, William 11, Letitia 25, Ann 9 also Susannah Pearsall 47

The children in this record have the same names and ages of those of William Grove Holmes b1805 from his first marriage to Ann Smith. Also, this William has the same occupation, so, there is a good chance that this record is that of WGH - Letitia's future husband.

If so:
1) Who is this Letitia? Is it that 'our' Letitia is already living as common-law wife of WGH? (if so, why do they then go to Manchester to get married in 1846?)
2) Why is she listed between William and Ann and with far too low an age? (should be listed as 30).
3) How is Susannah Pearsall connected and is she the one that brother Thomas (& Mary)'s son Thomas is named after?

It has been suggested that Letitia died on 29 Apr1847 but this record:
Letta Holmes birth abt 1847, Simpson, Bucks d: 29 Apr 1847 f:Thomas Holmes m:Esther Bodley suggests that it was a different Letitia.

Research:

Several researchers are of the opinion that this Letitia might be the daughter of Thomas's sister Letitia b1807 and Ronald McDougal.b1804

However, I believe this to be a more likely explanation:

Thomas's sister Letitia b1807 marries Ronald McDougal in Manchester in 1827.
Thomas & Mary marry in 1832.
No record of death for Ronald McDougal suggests that he died before 1837, if so, then a pregnant Mary might have been comforting her sister-in-law Letitia in Manchester (in the same way that we find that Mary staying with her parents not long before her father dies in 1861) when she gives birth.
Mary names her daughter Letitia McDougal Bryan after her sister-in-law (Thomas & Mary name later children in a similar way, eg: John Millman Bryan b1838 and Thomas Pearsall Bryan b1841).

If this is not the case then we need to explain why it took 6 years for T&M to have a child of their own.
