If this marriage is truly that of his parents:
Frederick Beards & Mary Morris 21 Mar 1842 Sedgley, Staffs
then it might explain why no baptismal record has yet been found for Alfred Beards.
Searching for possible birth records reveals:

In my opinion, the most likely scenario is that Alfred b1839 is the son of single mum, Mary Morris b1817, and adopts his new surname when Mary marries Frederick Beards in 1842.
