                4. Charles Stephan

Notes
General:
'Adam & Eve Stephan' are constructs used to tie together:

Peter Stephan b1796 in 'The Potteries' - a 'China Modeller'
William Stephan b1798 in Shelton - a 'China Potter'
Henry Stephan b1801 in Shelton - a 'China Potter'
Charles Stephan b1801 possibly in Shropshire - a 'China Painter'.

All of whom were living in the Ironbridge/Coalport area by 1841and working in the china industry.

No evidence has yet been discovered that suggests that 'Adam' actually existed as a single person nor that the four men were even related let alone 'brothers' but their common origin and closesness of dates of birth suggests it.

There are two possible patriarchs of the Coalport/Broseley/Ironbridge Stephans: the French (or French-Swiss), Pierre Stephan, a somewhat famous china figure modeller, and his brother (or maybe son) John Charles Stephan. Together they worked for various china companies including, Tournai, Chelsea (for Duesbury of the Derby China works), Derby in the early 1770s, Wirksworth and for Josiah Wedgewood in Etruria in the Potteries before moving on to Coalport and maybe Worcester and Bristol. Some examples of Pierre's work are held at the Victoria & Albert Museum. See Research Notes' below for more detail. To add to the confusion, one or two documents refer to Pierre using the anglicised version of his name, 'Peter'.

Here are two reords of the same marriage that might be relevant:

1 - Pallots marr: Peter Stephan & Hannah Johnson 1801 Stoke On Trent
2 - 18 Dec 1801 Peter Stephan, Modeller, & Hannah Johnson, sp. Wit.: S- P-, Saml. Turner. The Register of Marriages (Marriage) Stoke-Upon-Trent - Parish Registers, 1754-1812 LDS

There are member-submitted trees on Ancestry which give this couple as the parents of at least Peter b1796 and William b1798 (despite their births being before the marriage) but it is unclear (in my mind, at least) as to whether this Peter is 'Pierre', his son or a son of John Charles.

Could this record show that this Peter was was in Broseley by 1806?:
Bap:Hannah Strephon 12 Oct 1806 Saint Leonard, Broseley f:Peter Strephon m:Hannah IGI

We have a few more records for John Charles:

Mar: John Stephan, of Wirksworth, & Catherine Yates, lic. 04 Aug 1773 (Derbyshire: - Registers of Marriages, 1538-1812) (Assuming that this is John Charles Stephan) IGI

Bap: Frances Stephan, dau of John Charles Stephan, in 1773, Wirksworth LDS

Bap: John Charles Stephan son of John Stephan and Catherine, 19 Nov 1774 Derby, St Alkmund LDS

Some bapismal records from Longton to consider (are they all issue of the above union?):
23 June 1776: Peter son Charles Stephan modeller
3 May 1778: Elizabeth daughter Charles Stephen modeller
20 August 1780: Frances daughter Mr. Stephen modeller a German
13 August 1781: Peter son Mr. Shepthton modeller
16 September 1782: Cath. daughter John Stephen modeller
18 April 1784: ~~ daughter John Strepthon modeller

Another marr (Which JCS is this?):
m:John Charles Stephan & Rebecca Allin 14 Dec 1797 Whittington, Worcester LDS.

and another (who are her parents?):
m:Elizabeth Strephan & Joseph Oswell 19 Feb 1822 Saint Leonard, Broseley IGI

A third (less likely) theory:

There are records that show that a Peter Stephan was born 29 Feb 1748 in Lampertheim, Darmstadt, Hessen, Germany and had previously married Anna Margaretha Griesheimer on 25 Oct 1773. His ancestors include Count Heinrich Stephan Everstein Quarkenburg who was born in 1543 in Köngen, Esslingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany and married Countess Margretha zu Dietz born in 14 Oct 1544 in Nassau, Deggendorf, Bayern, Germany. This couple were married at Frauenberg, Birkenfeld, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany on 10 Aug 1577. The line can be followed back to 1404 with some certainty.

However, there seems to be no evidence of this Peter b1748 moving to England and the link is, as yet, unproven and is, in my opinion, unlikely.
Research:
Hilary Young:
"Llewellyn Jewitt, who knew Pierre's son, stated that Stephan was French, and his descendants claim Huguenot extraction and goes on to say:
Pierre Stephan... was for some years a modeller and china maker at Derby, and produced many lovely groups and single figures. He removed to Jackfield, where he commenced a small pot-works, producing not only earthenware, but encaustic dies. His son, Mr. Peter Stephan, is, at the time that I write, a skilled modeller at the Coalport China Works."

Ruth Ralsto:
"Stephan was an itinerant artist whose career is unknown. He appears and disappears like a will-o'-the-wisp in the histories of the English ceramic factories. Hurlbutt, in Old Derby Porcelain, says he was a Swiss of the French-speaking cantons who worked for Sprimont at Chelsea, and after the purchase of the Chelsea factory by Duesbury was transferred to the Derby factory.2 We know that he made an agreement with Duesbury, dated September I7, 1770, to work for three years, at a wage of two and a half guineas per week. He is described in the agreement as "a modeler and china or porcelain repairer."

We are indebted to John Cook of the Etruria Museum for copy of a manuscript letter from P. Stephan to Josiah Wedgwood which throws light on Stephan's activities when he left Derby at the close of his contract with Duesbury.

"Sir: "I was informed . . . that you gave great Encouragement to Artists in the Modelling branch, at which time I was Engaged with Mr. Duesbury of Derby, and since then with the China Factory at Wirksworth both of which I am now disengaged from . . . I shoud be glad to have an opportunity of being Employd by persons of taste and Merrit which I hear is the Character of your Manufactory. . "
Wirksworth 9th May 1774 "
N.B. I work in Figures, Vases, or any sort of Useful as Business may require."

Bills for work done for Wedgwood later in 1774 show that Stephan obtained the employment he sought at Etruria. Another manuscript letter, dated April 19, 1779, from William Cox to Josiah Wedgwood, shows that Pierre Stephan and his son were at that time offering models to Wedgwood, and that the Elder, as he is called, was arranging for a journey to Derby. Later the two Stephans are said to have modeled for John Rose at Coalport. As a free-lance, Pierre Stephan must have modeled for many of the famous potters in the last quarter of the eighteenth century."

Pierre Stephan to C WJessopp (Duesbury family's solicitor), 26 November 1818:
"Sir, Received yours, respecting mine models & moulds, that I have done for Mr. Duesbury, For the space nearly seven years, the value of them, I can estimate no less that they are worth £1500 as for the models that have been made after I have left Derby, I can say nothing about them, as I did not see any of them, but I am of the same opinion with ml Mason & Mr Lygo that the can be worth not less than £2000, as for the value I put opon my models & moulds I can take my oath enytime if required, I remain
Sir your obeat. Servt. P Stephen, Coalport 26. November.1818"

Stephan's deposition for the 1819 lawsuit:

Peter Stephan of Coalport in the County of Salop, Modeller and Artist, saith, that for the space of about 7 years between the 1770 and 1778\emdash he this Deponent was employed as a Modeller in the service of the late William Duesbury of Derby Porcelain Manufacturer at his Manufactory there\emdash That he this Deponent is very conversant with business of that nature, having been employed in it nearly all his life, and being now employed at the Coalport porcelain manufactory\emdash That the stock of Moulds and Models of the said William Duesbury, during the period of this Deponents service, was greatly increased in number and value by the additions made thereto by this Deponent and other Artists employed in the same department\emdash That the Moulds and Models made for the said William Duesbury by this Deponent alone, during his said service were in constant use and in the judgement and opinion of this Deponent, were well worth to the said Manufactory the sum of £1500, and that the whole of the stock of Moulds and Models belonging to the said Mr Duesbury and used in his said Manufactory, including those made by this deponent was altogether very extensive and of much greater value at the time this Deponent left the service of the said William Duesbury about the year 1778. And this Dept further saith, that to the best of this Deponent's judgement opinion and belief the said William Duesbury's stock of Moulds and Models must have been worth considerably more than £2000 in the year 1795 provided the said William Duesbury continued his said trade from the said year 1778 down to the year 1795 as he had theretofore done during the time this Deponent worked for the said William Duesbury.
