John T Egginton's Family Tree

Growing up in Wolverhampton and passing through Sedgley many times on the way to Dudley Zoo, I was always intrigued by the name of the Chemist shop in the middle of the village.  I always wondered if we were related.

Finding The Roots of John Tertius Egginton, Chemist of Sedgley

Q. Who were John Tertius's parents?
A. Well, the birth and bap records give a clue:
Birth: John Tertius Egginton 1861 Jul-Aug-Sep Dudley (To 1912) 6c 91
Bap:  John Thomas (sic) Egginton Male b:abt 1861 bap:2 Sep 1861 Sedgley, f: John Egginton m:Jane
Assuming that this bap record is truly that of John Tertius then we will see later why the vicar might have been confused.

Undoubtedly then, his father was John b1819 in Wombourne and his mother was Jane Baker of Sedgley as we can see in this marriage record:.
John Egginton & Jane Baker m1845 Jul-Aug-Sep Wolverhampton 17 268

The '51-81' censuses locate them all precisely:
1851: Bilston St, Sedgley. John Eggington 31 Tea & Provisions dealer, w Jane 31, Hannah 4, Anne 2, Walter 1, Hannah Whitehouse 17
1861: Church St, Sedgley. John Egginton 42 Grocer & Flour dealer, w Jane 42, Hannah 14, Ann (Anc:Amm) 12, Walter 11, Julia 5
1871: 2 Church St, Sedgley. John Egginton 52 Relieving Officer, w Jane 52,  Hannah 24, Ann 22, Julia 15, Walter 21, John T 9
1881: Vicar St, Sedgley. John Eggington 62 Relieving Officer, w Jane 62, Hannah 34, John T. 19 Asst School Master:

It would seem that both John & Jane died in the mid '80s.

Q. Who were John b1819 in Wombourne's parents?
A. Tricky, I have not yet found a baptism record for this John (there is one at St Thomas’s, Dudley on 6 Jun 1819 to Joseph & Eleanor) but the '41 census points  the way:
1841: Bilston St, Sedgley. Edward Egginton 45 Warehouseman, Margaret 40, John 20, Jane 15

NB This is the only census record I have found of a John for miles around within 10 yrs of this date

As the address is the same as in '51, there is a very strong possibility that John's father was Edward born between 1792 and 1796 in Staffordshire.

If this is indeed 'our' John then his sister Jane's baptism record suggests that his mother was not the Margaret seen in the record:
Bap: Jane Egginton Female b:abt 1823 bap:17 Feb 1823 Sedgley. f: Edward Egginton m:Susanna.

There is another baptism suggesting the same:
Bap: Hannah Egginton Female b:abt 1825 bap:29 Apr 1825 Sedgley. f: Edward Egginton m:Susanna

What happened to these girls, I don't know, but it would seem that Susanna died in 1830 and Edward married 'Margaret' a couple of years later:

Q. So who is this Edward?
A. These are the census records for Edward:
1841: Bilston St, Sedgley. Edward Egginton 45 Warehouseman, Margaret 40, John 20, Jane 15
1851: Tettenhall Wood.  Edward Egginton 59 b:Sedgley Brick maker & Beer Seller, Margaret 53 b:Worthing, Salop, gd Jane Evans 9, serv Thomas Birch 17, ldgr Thomas Rogers 18, ldgr William Rogers 20
1861: Tettenhall Wood. Elizabeth Rea 55, Mary Rea 13, John Williams 24, boarder Edward Egginton 69 wid b:Sedgley Proprietor of Houses

These would suggest that Edward was born 1792 in Sedgley and moved to Tettenhall Wood, leaving John in Bilston St.. If they are different Edwards then where are their counterparts each of  the censuses?  Could gd Jane Evans be dau of Jane or Hannah?

There is, however, another Edward in the area and being b1796 seems to fit better with the misleading (age-wise) '41 census.

1841: Crabtree Lane, Kingswinford. Edw Egginton 40 Furnaceman, Charlotte 20, Mary 18, George 15 Furnaceman, Edwd 15 Puddler, Elizabeth 13, Ann 7, Rosanah 3, Harriott 2 (All born 'in county' except Charlotte & Mary)
1851: Himley Village.  Edward Egginton 82 B:Himley Annuitant, Edward 55 b:Himley Forge lab, dil Ann 47 b:Hotleyend?, gd Anna Maria 15 b:BH, gd Rosanna 13 b: BH, gd Sarah Jane 7 b:BH (BH=Brierley Hill)
1861: Himley Village. Edward Egginton 66 b:Himley Ironworker, w Ann 57 b:BH, d Sarah 19 b:BH, gs George Ed 4 b:B'ham
1871: Himley. Edward Egginton 67 (sic) b:Himley Forge lab, gs George Egginton 15 b:B'ham

It has been suggested by some members of 'Ancestry' that this is John's family - but this is most unlikely.  If Charlotte and Mary were born 'out of county' - wouldn't John have been there too?  Who would the other Edward be to him (not an uncle) that he would go live with him in Sedgley? This Edward turns out to be a cousin in Jack Lotto's line.

So to summarize, in my opinion, JT's father was John b1819 in Wombourne and his grandfather was Edward born 1792 in Sedgley.  An 'iffy' baptismal record in the IGI for Edward (but later conformed by Joan Colbourne's viewing of the parish register) give his parents as Walter b1758 in Kingswinford & Anne Bagley of Sedgley.

As for his name - the 'Tertius' part turns out to be that he was the third 'attempt' by his parents to have a son named after his father - after John b1857 and John Thomas b1859 had both died as babies - no wonder the vicar got his name wrong.

And for reference:
