In the early 1800s there were a number of Brownsword families in the area of Cheshire between Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffs, Crewe and Nantwich. Placenames like Church-Lawton, Whybunbury (pronounced Wi-ben-bree), Englesea-Brook, Odd Rode and Betley crop up frequently.
Thomas would appear to be the one who brought the name of Brownsword to Wednesbury although there were others on the other side of West Bromwich.
