Developers want to replace historic building with four houses
Dozens back campaign to save last trap factory
By Daniel Wainwright
Dozens of people have signed an online petition calling for the last former trap-making factory in Wolverhampton to be spared from demolition. Developers want to replace the empty property in Taylor Street, Wednesfield, with four houses.
The application was submitted despite the building being designated a "heritage asset" by the council. An online petition was set up on the council's website last Monday and by today 79 people had signed it. The campaign has united Conservative and Labour councillors in Wednesfield.
The petition has also been signed by Wednesfield-born Apprentice finalist Ruth Badger, who said: "I am a Wednesfield girl, born and bred. I love Wednesfield dearly. Wednesfield does not have that many old buildings left. We need new business for growth but we also need to save room for our heritage".
The building was once John Williams & Son Trap Makers. Taylor Street resident Nikkie Potts, who started the online petition, said: "In 1863 Wednesfield had over 200 recorded trap-makers, and to my knowledge the trapmakers at 43 Taylor Street is the last man standing."
Andy Law, planning agent for applicant Shim Singh, said the building had fallen into a state of disrepair and would be too costly to refurbish.
The business was renowned for its manufacture of the Terror and Ferret Snap Trap rat traps and famous for the 50 Dorset bow spring gin trap.
After 125 years the link between John Williams and trap making came to an end in 1966. The building was designated a heritage asset last year after a campaign by Erica Williams, the great-great-grand-daughter of John Williams.
Miss Williams splits her time between Sedgley and her job in Germany. She said: "I can only state how heartening it has been to discover just how many people are concerned about their local heritage."
