Removal Orders from Westerleigh
1820 Oct 6: Elizabeth Bancroft, wife of Robert, Eliza 17, William 12, Jonathan 8, Jane 4, Thomas 17m, to Box Wilts. (P/W/OP/5/131) NA page
National Archives (Bristol): "Westerleigh is an ancient church which up to 1886 was a chapelry annexed to the cure of Pucklechurch. On 3rd August 1886 by an Order-in-Council it was created "a district chapelry". See P/W/I/7 The records contain many poor law papers which have been listed in detail, with an index attached to this schedule."
Removal orders were used when people would otherwise become a burden on the parish under the Poor Laws. Destitute people had to be helped by being given Poor Relief.
To be eligible for relief, you had to be officially resident in the parish, i.e. born there, own property there, or be in possession of a certificate granting you resident status.
Without such a status, the Overseers of the Poor would do all they could in order not to have to pay up - so they would pay someone to take you back to where you came from, with an order from the court to their Overseers explaining that things were then their responsibility.
The original documents were generally a single page; a preprinted form in which the relevant names and dates were filled by hand. The orders were apparently very common.
In some cases the form gives a reason why the parish would be liable - a single woman being pregnant would be sent "home" because the parish would end up paying to support her over the birth and the child even after the girl was able to work again.
For a family the reason would probably be unemployment of the father, but ages of children might be given - very useful!
Sometimes you get a comment on the paper saying who accompanied the destitute people, when, and occasionally what his expenses were.
