I have recently been taken to task by Graham Kennison about the place I have given for the place of Ebenezer's death (rightly so). He questioned whether we still had workhouses in 1942. Well, no, we didn't. After looking through the records of burials at the General Cemetery (Merridale) - the last death to be recorded as being at the 'workhouse' specifically was Nov 1927, all deaths at that place from 1928 onwards were entered as being at 'New Cross' or 'New Cross Institution'. When that place became 'New Cross Hospital', I don't know but clearly the old name lived on in the memory of the people who knew what the building once was.
The long and short of it is that my great-grandfather did not die in 'the workhouse' as such. His place of death given on his death certificate is simply 'Wolverhampton Rd, Heath Town', further, it gives his residence as 41 Gordon St. As I understand it, none of his children were in a position to cope with his needs in his dying days, hence he was admitted to New Cross.
