1. *William Grove Holmes Marriage: Children: 1. William Holmes
Notes
General:
It has been suggested that the mother of William Holmes b1845 on the Isle of Wight and son of a William Grove Holmes (based on William's marriage certificate to Emma Mold in 1866), was Elizabeth Hanson born in Birmingham. However, records seem to indicate thatElizabeth Hanson did not marry a WGH ('just' a WH), her son William was born in 1842 and she and her son lived their lives in B'ham (look for her pages using the 'Surnames' or 'Names Index').Research:
1851: Bailey Lane, Sheffield. Charles Foster 26, Jane 23 b Derbyshire, sister Betsey Holmes 35 b Sheffield Mar, n Emma Foster 12, n Wm Holmes 6 b IOW (If Charles Foster is Elizabeth's brother then her maiden name must have been 'Foster').
1861: Holborn, Middx. Elizabeth Holmes 45 b Sheffield, son William Holmes 16 b IOW
Note: WGH b1829 is not in these censuse - he married Anna Maria O'Neill in Dublin in 1852 and was with a Derby-born Ann in Sunderland in 1861 with two young children. So eitherElizabeth lied about being married, he was a bigamist or there is another WGH.
Marriage Notes (William Grove Holmes)
1841: Cross Burgess St, Sheffield. Robert Foster 22, Robert 55, Mary 45, Charles 18 Edge Tool maker, Emma 3
The 'Charles' here could be the brother Elizabeth is living with in 1851 - in which case their parents might be the Robert 55 & Mary 45 mentioned.
A Robert Foster and a Mary Dixon were married 11 Jan 1812 in Leeds in LDS
A Robert Foster and a Mary Oxtoby were married 2 May 1814 Bilton Ainsty,Yorks LDS
A Robert Foster and a Mary Hodgson were married 9 Sep 1815 Owthorne,Yorks LDS
An Elizabeth Foster was baptized 15 May1814 in Sheffield with parents Robert & Mary LDS
An Elizabeth Foster was born 20 Feb 1821 in Sheffield with parents Robert & Mary LDS
No marriage record found.
The main problems with yhis pairing of Elizabeth (b Sheffield) with WGH b1829 is his age, the fact that he married Anna Maria O'Neill in Dublin in 1852 and that he had another family in Sunderland in 1861.

Notes
General:
Elizabeth's details prior to marrying Harry are somewhat uncertain. At a quick glance, a search of 'Ancestry' databases leads, through a series of errors, to the conclusion that she was the daughter of Moses Foster and was born in Darlaston. A closer study of the original handwritten census sheets given in the 'Research Notes' section disproves this and shows that that EJF married Alfred Shelton in 1885.Research:
Further, Harry & Elizabeth's marriage certificate (thanks Margaret Charlton) gives her father as a 'Locksmith' named 'William'.
There seems to be only one locksmith William producing children from the 1840s to the '60s so that helps but the only census record (1871) that might show them in the same household is split across two sheets and the first is badly damaged with his forename missing.
The upshot is that details given here for Elizabeth (before 1883), her parents & siblings must be treated with caution. See the Research Notes section for a more detailed discussion.

Marriage Notes (Herbert Henry Egginton)
Known fact 1: Elizabeth was born about 1861/62
Known fact 2: Elizabeth's father was William, a locksmith.
The sequence of connections used to piece together the Foster family, goes like this:
1 Search for Elizabeth b1862 in the 1871 census
2 Find a sister, Matilda
3 Search for Matilda b1864 in 1881 census
4 Find a brother, Frederick
5 Search for Frederick b1856 in 1861 census
6 Find their father, William, a Locksmith
The only* record to fit the bill found at Ancestry is the one given - but due to a 'page break', she has been separated from the older members of the family. Unfortunately, Ancestry transcribers have reversed the order of the sheets, partly due to them having been damaged, and assigned her to the wrong parents. The correct continuation sheet is so badly damaged that the forenames of her father, a 52 yr old Locksmith, and a 12 yr old sister are completely missing on the plus side we do learn that she has a 7 yr old sister, 'Matilda'.
The only Matilda b1864 to appear in the '81 census is lodging with a brother, Frederick, and his family. Searching for him in the census of 1861 finds him with his father William, a locksmith, and mother Ellen and some other siblings.
Although this chain between Elizabeth in the 1871 census and William in the 1861 census looks tenuous, the lack of plausible alternatives for various family members strengthens the proposition that these are daughter and father and that the other players are indeed Herbert Harry's in-laws.
*Due to errors in Ancestry's transcriptions of the '71 and '91 records for Elizabeth Jessie Foster, it would be easy to confuse her Elizabeth Jane Foster.
Here are Elizabeth Jessie's records:

1911: 9 Wyrley St, Wolverhampton. Alfred Shelton 48 b:Tipton Railway Engine cleaner, Elizabeth Shelton 48 b:Darlaston, Albert 23 b:W'ton, Frederick 19 b:W'ton
