NB. Charles's death certificate has caused considerable confusion as it bears an important error: the 'informant', Sarah Hoaglund (his daughter b1885), gave Charles's father as 'Ralph'.
After many hours of research, no suitable Ralph was found who might possibly be Charles's father. The question was finally answered by looking more closely at Charles's wife and their children.
The UK birth certificate of their daughter Frances b1869, the US birth record of George H b1873 and the US death record of Thomas b1884 all give their mother's name as Anne Wheatley.
Armed with both names it was then possible to find their marriage details and obtain a copy of the marriage certificate which shows that the father of the Charles Meller who married Ann Wheatley on 20 May 1866 at St Clement's Church, Nechells, Birmingham, England was 'Earthenware Dealer, John Meller'. This is in line with Charles's baptism records.
The 'Ralph' mentioned by Sarah Hoaglund (b1885, daughter of Charles & Ann) is probably Charles's half-brother b1826, ie 18yrs his senior (old enough to be his father). They both moved to Birmingham, married there in the 1860s and then moved on to Peterborough where both worked as 'smiths' on railway wagons. Clearly there was a strong bond between Ralph & Charles but not that of father & son (unless Sarah knew something we don't).

The farthest I've got back to with the Meller family is 1836 and George Meller who was my G/G/Grandfather Born c1836 at Higham On The Hill. Died Q/ Ending Jun 1897 in the district of Hinckley { I think it was at Sutton Cheney as he had a coal
Business there } He married Elisa Robinson the, illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Robinson Eliza Born c1836 at H.O.T.H. Died 1897 They had six children all Born at Higham. Clara Mary Ann. Born 1 Aug 1859, Elizabeth Born c1860, Frances Born c1866, Ann Mary Born c1869, John A Born c1873, Ada Emma Born c1876
Clara married Thomas Beebe { who was born Beeby } 17 Jun 1880 at Dadlington They had three children, George William Beeby Born 2 Sep 1880 at Higham and lived with his Gran and Grandad Meller until he left school, he Died Oct 1958 at Bedworth and was Buried Beebe. Thomas Beebe my Grandfather Born 27 Aug 1882 at Cold Comfort Hinckley Died 7 Jan 1964 at Nuneaton. Alice Beebe Born 6 Feb 1884 at Fenn Lanes Stoke Golding Died 27 Apr 1972 at Nuneaton. She is Carol Hollingworth Grandmother
I hav'nt got your Samuel Meller in my tree, could he be the father to my George ?
As for finding Clara in the 1881 census she was married and living in as a servant in a farm at Nuneaton fields the Nuneaton Side of the A5 road, and Thomas was living with his mother and father and down as single. A member of NNWFHS once asked me if I had read the History of the Meller Family of Higham and I told her that I had'nt she said that she would borrow it for me to read, but the person who had it, had loaned it out to some one who had lost it so I never did read it. I did wonder if Hinckley Library had a copy. I've checked at Nuneaton, which have the History of Higham but not the Meller's
In January 1891 Thomas and Clara were living with their children Thomas and Alice at No 1 Bull Street Attleborough, which is only a mile and half to the place where he committed suicide at Hydes Pastures which is in Warwickshire that field comes under the district of Hinckley so I had to get his death certificate from Leicester. Thomas died on 11 Jan 1891 and Buried 15 Jan at Dadlington
Then on the 18 May 1891 Clara married a William Ward Born c1863 at Coventry Died 12/13 Nov 1940 at Market Bosworth Buried at Higham. They were married at St Mary's Church Nuneaton, On 17 Aug 1891 Clara gave birth to a son William Ward { she must have been pregnant when Thomas killed himself } at No 3 Court Abbey Street Nuneaton, they then must have moved to Higham as William Died 18 Oct 1892 at Higham age 14 Mths they then had six more children all Born at Higham Albert Born 26 May 1893. Hope this is of use to you
