I have no 'proof' as yet that the Thomas who married Elizabeth Salter, and had the children below, was the one born in 1776 but it seems likely.

WARNING: I have not found any documentary evidence to connect this Thomas with any set of parents - yet.

Identifying Thomas

POB: In the '51 and '61 censuses Thomas gives his place of birth as Worfield - other entries show that the enumerator has not simply 'dittoed' places of birth and is therefore likely to be correct.

YOB: Thomas consistently gives his age, in the three censuses in which he appears, as being about 3 yrs younger than Ann and we know that Ann was born at the end of 1786 from her baptismal record, so that suggests Thomas was born about 1789.

It would seem likely then that this Thomas was born about 1789 and in Worfield. Unfortunately, his baptismal record has not yet been found and so it is difficult to determine who are his parents.

Common Errors identifying Ann Lewis's husband/Tryphaena's father.

Some Bishton researchers have suggested that he was Thomas Bishton b1776 in Donington to parents Robert Bishton & Jane Humpage also of Donington. I believe that this the Thomas who married Elizabeth Salter in 1798 in Donington - and if he is not then who are his parents?

Another candidate has been suggested, Thomas b1785 in Donington to the Dawley coal & iron industrialist John Bishton and his wife Betty Jellicorse (both of Donington). This Thomas's life is well documented, he married Elizabeth Dale and died in 1839 and is clearly not this Thomas who, as we have seen, was born in Worfield.

Possibilities

Working the other way round, if we look for a Bishton family based in Worfield, with no other son named 'Thomas' and no other child born in 1789 then there are at least two possible sets of parents:

1. Thomas b1746 and Elizabeth Hodgkins.
2. John b1767 and Mary Robinson

At present I am leaning towards the latter couple on the basis of a couple of points. One being the close proximity of Valentine in a couple of censuses and the other is the use of more 'classical' names (Tryphaena/Phoebe/Alexander) - weak, I know but it's the best I've got for now.

Another possibility is that we're looking for the wrong surname - it is quite possible that Thomas is the illegitimate son of a female Bishton and a father whose surname he was given at baptism but subsequently didn't use (just like Frederick, Thomas's grandson by his daughter Harriet). In this case we're probably banjaxed.

1851: Worfield. Thomas Bishton 56 AgLab, w Ann 58, lodgers: Richard Glerge 41, William Glerge 45, John Lewis 50 (58?). Something wrong with the ages here unless they refer to a different, younger Thomas & Ann who cannot be found in 41 or 61. (Valentine just down the road)

No record has been found which links Thomas b1789 to this couple however they are one of the few families in Worfield having children at the right time and do not have another living Thomas.

There seems to be a 'natural' gap at about 1780 (which could suggest another Thomas & Elizabeth couple) and Thomas would have to be squeezed in at 1789.
